Comprehending the Incomprehensible

There are these separate, random, and completely unrelated threads that I want to braid together here into a rope we can hold onto tightly. These come from a textbook, a plaque,a movie clip and God's Word.

In the textbook I'm reading about God's specific revelation and it says -
"Having only observed finite forms, we find it impossible to grasp infinite concepts. In this sense, God always remains incomprehensible. It is not that we do not have knowledge of him, and genuine knowledge at that. Rather, the short coming lies in our in ability to encompass Him within our knowledge."

My wall plaque says -
"When you come to the edge of all the light you have known and are about to step out into the darkness,
Faith is knowing one of two things will happen...
There will be something to stand on or you will be taught to fly."

The third thread is a clip from Prince Caspian - before you see it you need to know that the lion, Aslan, was used by C.S. Lewis as a representation of God and the little girl is the one who believes - notice how she pulls her small dagger out in face of the thousands of soldiers who are about to attack her. No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him. I Corinthians 2:9

For since the world began, no ear has heard, and no eye has seen a God like you, who works for those who wait for Him! Isaiah 64:4

God is incomprehensible.
He has solutions that are beyond our imagination.
Who could imagine that, when faced with overwhelming enemies, the river would come to life in the form of a twenty story warrior...
Who would ever think that in stepping off into darkness that instead you will fly...

God is incomprehensible.
He has solutions beyond our imagination...
exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think...You can hang onto that!

Safe

My daughter came stumbling into our room at 4 a.m. “I had a bad dream”, she said as she crawled into bed. Did she want to talk about it? An immediate, adamant “No!” Ten minutes she was sound asleep safe in her dad’s arms. Safe When she experienced this bad thing she went to where she would feel safe. Later in the morning she told me about her bad dream and it wasn’t as scary to her in the 7 am brightness as it had been in the dark. Could we have explained that it wasn’t that bad and just a dream to her in the middle of the night? Not a chance, at that point she just needed to feel surrounded and protected. When trouble comes, overwhelming troubles like the constant crashing of waves on the seashore, where do you go to be safe? Friends

2008 has been such a relational year so far for me. I set up a Facebook account and from there discovered high school and college friends and even kids I used to baby-sit who now have growing families of their own. It’s been a time of reconnecting to people I never knew I’d have contact with again and it’s been interesting to see how we are the same people today that we were twenty years ago; only a little more worn out from use! When I was a child, I remember hearing in a sermon that in your life you will be lucky if you can count the number of true friends you have on one hand. That was preposterous to me! One hand? Five friends? I had way more than five friends! Of course I didn’t have the perspective at twelve that I do now. Now I understand. My definition of friend has matured with my years and I am so blessed by those “friends” who have matured along with my definition. Is there any thing in this world as amazing as a friend?
